Shsrp rise for seventh day in a row with over 40,000 cv cases. Infections are higher in the young but hospital admissions are higher in older people. Deaths rising.
Javid said that cases could reach 100,000 per day over the winter. But tighter restrictions (plan B) will not be introduced at this point.
Government still resisting calls for restrictions to be introduced despite cv cases being the highest today since July.

Omicron cases doubled in a day. Highly transmittable and if not checked will cause 1,000 hospital admissions per week.
First death from Omicron virus - which is spreading at a phenomenal rate.
Jabs now offered to all over 18s. Programme needs to be ramped up to double to cover this.
Omicron now accounts for 40% of all cases in London and will be dominant virus countrywide by the end of the week.

Self isolation cut from 10 to 6 if two negative tests on day 6 and 7.

1 in 15 people across the UK had covid in the run up to the new year - but Boris says there is no need for any restrictions!
New rules: if your lateral flow test is positive you now don't have to take a pcr test to confirm it. LFTs are in short supply and so many staff are off with covid that they can't administer as many tests as they would like.
In NW England covid numbers have doubled over the last week.
