June 23: Mykonos and Syros

Sunday 25 June

Mykonos

Plane was delayed by over an hour with bad weather in Manchester. Loads of rain but no lightning and still very hot and humid.  Soon got above the clouds to the sunshine when we took off.

Short taxi ride to our accommodation. Tourlos - new port. View from outside our door - looking forward to seeing it in daylight.

Short walk down the road for beer and a bite to eat.

Then bed 🥱

Monday 26 June

Mykonos

Room with a view 😁

Looking across to Syros. Molly waving 🤣

I wondered why there was an armchair just sitting there near the bar 🤔

Sea bus into town.

Meal with a view.

Wander round Mykonos.

Petros the pelican the local celeb - common sight in the town 😁

 Sunset from our balcony.

Lovely just watching all the ferries and cruise liners coming in and out of the harbour. We will be sailing across to Syros on the Blue Star ferry.

Tuesday 27 June

Off for a walk into Mykonos before catching the ferry to Syros. No paths 😁

Breakfast at a little bakery with baklava and custard pastries 😋 .. and a fabulous view 😁

As we walked around we saw some ladies doing a photoshoot - just celebrating life' they told me. Good for them!

A further wander. Very busy today with at least 6 huge cruise ships in and around the harbour.

The 'Let's take a selfie' tour.. 🤣🤣🤣

Old harbour.

Same views as yesterday but one bar along 🤣

Syros

Ferry.

Met by Molly then straight onto a bus. Love our new tour guide! 😍

Molly led us to our apartment. The man seemed very bemused - we weren't staying there but next door.. 🤣🙄

Found out accommodation. Owner was equally bemused til we explained the booking was just for two of us not three 🤣 and that Molly was one of the cat ladies 😁

Dumped the bags, gave Molly her sandals and went out for a meal.. 😋 Delicious food.

View from our veranda.

Met up with Molly again when she finished work and went for a facetime with the fam, drink and more food.

Beautiful sunset.

Wednesday 28 June

Syros

6am. Sun just coming over the hill and 24⁰ already.

Went for a walk along the bay then breakfast.

Then a visit to Syros Cats where Molly is volunteering. Beautiful cats 🐱💕

Out for a meal after a siesta 😴

Moussaka, port and lamb.. delicious.. 😋

Molly and two of her friends - Ellie and Abbie - came round in the evening for a drink. Lovely girls.

Evening view

Thursday 29 June

Syros

Met Molly for breakfast, sunbeds and a swim.

Bus to Ermoupolis in the afternoon. Great tour guide.. 😁

Church of the Dormition. Very ornate.

Late lunch in a pretty little side street.

St Nicholas' Church.

More wandering.

Beautiful place for cocktails.

.. and we had some lemon and mint shisha in a hookah pipe 🤣

A quick trip to the supermarket then a look at the traditional dancing in the main square.

Then back on the bus and home. A great day - and a great tour guide!.. 😁

Friday 30 June

Syros

Lazy morning. Went for a walk around town to find our way up to the church. When we eventually got there it was locked! Nice walk though.

As it was then 12:01 we decided that meze and wine was appropriate as a late breakfast 😁

Molly walked down to eat with us so we had the same again.

Then Jackie (cat sanctuary) joined us so we had a third bottle of wine. Lovely lady.

Out in the evening when it was cooler for a sunset walk to Delfini beach.

A cat joined us for part of the walk back - keeping perfect pace with us along a wall at the side 😁

Saturday 1 July

Syros

Molly organised us a taxi and we went to Ano Syros - the original medieval town in Ermoupolis which was built on a hill for fortification purposes.

Lots of interesting churches and winding back streets.

Parts of it very reminiscent of Cuenca.

Quirky little bar where we stopped for coffee and water.

Interesting to see the machine where you can pay to fill up your container with drinking water.

Bag from the bakery. They love their cats here 😍🐾

Saw Molly and her friends on the bus as we came back. They were just off to Ermoupolis for a fish spa on their feet 🤣🐠

Met Molly for our last meal together.

As we sat down to eat a cat joined us and sat down on the chair at the head of the table. Very funny.

Molly and her friends came round to eat gyros and have a drink - and take back all the leftovers from our fridge.

Sad to be leaving tomorrow ☹️

Sunday 2 July

Molly's last tour guide task - order a taxi to take us to the ferry 😟

Back to Mykonos.

Mykonos

Gor the sea bus into town then took a taxi from there up to our new digs in Ornos.

Lovely view - and a pool 😁

Went for a short walk. Gave up when we couldn't find a bar.

Came back to watch the sun set.

Monday 3 July

Mykonos

Early morning view - there were clouds!! ☁️

It stayed sunny/cloudy all day but was very humid too.

Baklava and a sort of orange and honey cake for breakfast - delicious 😋

Walked into Mykonos to check if we can leave luggage at the bus station on our final day before we catch a bus to the airport. Yes we can.

Then got the bus from there to Agios Ioannis.

Had a wander then got back on the bus to go for lunch on the beach at Ornos. The bus driver, who was on his way back to Mykonos, kindly radioed through to the bus going the other way. We didn't know this at the time but had resigned ourselves to going back to Mykonos and coming back out again - which we weren't bothered about as the bus had air con.

Then the bus stopped and the driver beckoned us off and escorted us over the road and onto the waiting bus full of bemused passengers. No idea if it was a regular thing but we were very happy about it 😁

So lunch on the beach at Ornos then. Moussaka (not as nice as Syros!) and chicken souvlaki for Mike.

Then the walk on the road back to our accommodation - at least we were facing the incoming traffic 😁

It's obviously the norm here with no pavements to see people walking along the verges and most drivers are very aware but occasionally they can get VERY close!

A dip in the pool for me and a relax in the air con for Mike.

Another beautiful sunset and a bit of a photo shoot in the end with Mike trying to work out how to change the exposure for pics on my phone.

Don't think it can be changed on the rear selfie camera though. Need to Google 😁

Very misty.

Tuesday 4 July

Mykonos

Early morning pic with a full moon.

Walked into Mykonos to look at the left luggage option at the old port.

The town was very crowded - a couple of HUGE cruise liners in port.

Walked round some of the back streets. Very pretty - and nice view of the windmills.

Decided we would be better leaving bags at the other bus station where we can get the bus to the airport.

Decided to go to Paradise Beach. Bus was very crowded - I got on but Mike didn't. Luckily they put another one on - and though he left after me, he got there first! 🤣

Lunch on Paradise Beach.

Too hot to do the short walk to the next beach so we jumped on the water taxi back to Ornos.

Our last sunset here.

Wednesday 5 July

Home

Walk to Ornos then a bus into Mykonos. Left the luggage there then walked to the bus station at the old port to get a bus out to Ano Mera.

Found a lovely little taverna for lunch.

Monastery.

Back to Mykonos for a last wander.

Last drink in Little Venice.

Saw Peter pelican again.

Then off to the airport. Flight delayed by over an hour but Luisa was there to meet us.

A great holiday!
