May 17: Northumberland

Friday 19 May

Saturday 20 May

Wet day in Berwick.

Week in Beal  about two miles away from the causeway over to Lindisfarne

Sunday 21 May

Biked over to Lindisfarne and deliberately marooned ourselves there as the tide came in.

Monday 22 May

Boat out to the Farne Islands to see all the birds which come to breed in May/June of every year.

We picked the best day of the week to go out there - beautiful sunshine and not too breezy.  Birds were great to see but very smelly!

The puffins were fun to watch and the terns kept pecking at everyone's heads as they went by - not so much fun!!

We even saw dolphins and seals on the way back to shore.

Some of the beaches were really beautiful - and quite deserted as it was still very early in the season so not many people were about on holiday.

The tiny island of St Cuthbert's on Lindisfarne was really lovely - so peaceful and tranquil - and a great place to collect little pieces of sea glass from along the shore nearby.

The bird man of Lindisfarne...

Lovely place for a picnic - nice and sheltered.  Think we'd taken the spot usually used by the locals as a group of elderly women practically ran over to the bench as soon as we moved from it!

We checked the tides and marooned ourselves on Holy Island for the day - very peaceful and lovely to watch the tide going in and out.

Found out the reason it had seemed such hard going to bike across there - I'd cycled with a puncture - luckily Mike was able to sort it so the ride back was a lot smoother!

A great week - mixed bag of weather with sunshine and showers but very peaceful and relaxing.
