Jan 17: Rome

Tuesday 10 January

Flight from Manchester to Ciampino airport in Rome then a bus to the Termini train station.  What should have been an easy walk to the hotel near the Trevi fountain turned into a bit of a trek as we hadn't worked out the scale and were going too far but we eventually found it, booked in then set off for a walk round the city.

Pantheon and river Tiber...

Ice cream at the Trevi fountain - and throwing a coin over my right shoulder to ensure that I come back!...

Wednesday 11 January

Walk to Vatican City in brilliant sunshine - very cold though...

St Peter's Square...

The Basilica...

Outside the Vatican museums was a great view of the Basilica - and it was so warm that I had to take my coat off - different story as soon as you walked into the shadows though and there were icicles on some of the fountains...

Sistine Chapel - no photos allowed!...

We then went to the Torre Argentina - an area of ruins where Caesar is said to have been murdered.  Quite bizarrely this is standing in the middle of the road with traffic all around it - and even more bizarrely it houses a cat sanctuary and is over run by loads of cats looked after by Rome's cat women!...

Thursday 12 January

A cold walk up to the Termini train station past more fountains with icicles...

Then a two hour train journey down the coast to Naples with our accommodation just round the corner from the train station - very handy!

Out again to find the local train station (like the metro) - again just around the corner - and a short train ride out to Herculaneum.  Very cold and very overcast so the photos weren't very good.  But very interesting to see.

Friday 13 January

Back out on the local train a bit further today to visit Pompeii - overcast, blustery and rainy.

An ominous Vesuvius in the background to some of these pictures...

Then it was back to Napoli to try their pizza and Peroni!

I loved the graffiti on the local Circumvesuvio trains...

Saturday 14 January

More sunshine so today we had a good walk around the old part of town and visited the Cathedral and walked round the outside of the Colosseum at night.

Sunday 15 January

Walk down to the Vatican to see the Pope - glorious sunshine!...

Then another walk through the Vatican museum...

Monday 16 January

Back to the grey and drizzle for our trip to see the Colosseum from the inside...

Then a wander round more ruins and temples - all very beautiful.

Another look at the Trevi fountain - hard to miss it really as it was just literally round the corner from where we stayed.  It always had a crowd of people at whatever time night or day!

Tuesday 17 January

An early morning bus ride back out to the airport to get the plane for home.

A great week with loads of walking done - at least 10 miles every day - glad to go home for a rest!!
